Purpose:

The Automation & Controls Engineer will play a technical role in supporting new and existing “End of Line” parts handling equipment and provide electrical and controls support for other pieces of equipment throughout the plant.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee automation projects for new and existing equipment.
  • Provide engineering support for equipment upgrades, machine replacements, and new equipment.
  • Assist with troubleshooting and repairs of mechanical, electrical, and control systems.
  • Identify improvement opportunities and use a data driven approach to quantify the improvement, develop timelines, and develop budgets.
  • Communicate with various departments within the corporation to obtain information and provide project updates.
  • Research and evaluate new technologies as they pertain to the manufacturing process.
  • Understand and follow up on significant reoccurring equipment failures.
  • Lead and/or participate in cross functional teams that focus on process improvement.
  • Manage and work on various projects as requested by department leadership.
  • Provide electrical / mechanical installation support and technical expertise during project commissioning.
  • Optimize performance of automated equipment, inspection equipment, and robotic work cells.
  • Created training instructions and standard operating procedures for use in equipment implementation. Assist with training as needed.
  • Write Capital Improvement Projects with responsibilities from start to finish.
  • Responsible for adherence to all Berry, industry, and/or regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain and enforce all company safety, environmental, and department of health requirements.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to automation, controls or equivalent work experience.

Practical:

  • Individual must be “Safety and Team Oriented”, a “Good Communicator”, and possess “Project Management” skills.
  • Strong computer skills are required. CAD and SolidWorks experience is a plus, as well as, a good understanding of MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint, and the ability to collect and analyze large portions of data.
  • Understand High and Low voltage controls.
  • Can troubleshoot systems utilizing skills associated with software, mechanical, and/or electrical methods.
  • Experience with Continuous Improvement initiatives such as Six Sigma, Kaizen, 5-S, and Lean Manufacturing is a plus.
  • Machine control experience:
    • PLC
    • Motor Control & Drives
    • Pneumatic Control Systems
    • Electrical System Control Design
    • Multi Axis Robotics

 

Physical Expectations:

  • Hearing sufficient to recognize and respond to shouted warnings, alarms and horns on forklifts.
  • Stereo optical vision of 20/40 or better and peripheral vision of 70 degrees or greater and ability to read 10–12-point font at a distance of 12-18 inches.
  • Able to see and identify colors. (Complete an “Ishiharar” color Vision Test)
  • Able to use both hands for effective manipulation of tools/parts.
  • Ability to work at heights (with or without fall protection).
  • Must not be at risk of sudden alterations in consciousness.
  • Ability to lift 35 pounds a minimum of 10 times per day.
  • Ability to push/pull loads of approx. 45 lbs. at a minimum of 10 times per day/shift.
  • Able to work in extremes of heat/cold.
  • Able to work overhead or in awkward positions on a frequent basis.
  • Ability to occasionally climb on and off a forklift safely and without assistance.
