About the Role

As an intern at Berry Global, you'll meet and learn from business leaders across the organization, work on meaningful projects, and develop skills, knowledge and connections that will propel you forward in your career. Berry's internship program is designed to bridge the gap between classroom concepts and practical application in a real-world industrial manufacturing environment.

 

Berry's Maintenance department is responsible for the maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of all mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic functions of equipment and its supporting automation. The Machine Maintenance Intern will assist full-time Maintenance Technicians with certain activities essential to the successful operation of our plant. Daily workload will consist primarily of developing the Maintenance department's work-order software, Asset Essentials, and will be augmented by maintenance projects assigned by the Hiring Manager. This position will comprise of approximately 70% desk/computer work and 30% hands-on work in the production area. Personal accountability is expected, questions are encouraged, and constructive feedback is welcome as we pursue our mission of always advancing to protect what's important.

 

Compensation: $20 - $24/hour

 

**The Machine Maintenance Intern will work onsite at the Lawrence, KS facility and is intended to be temporary for the summer of 2025. This position is expected to work a full-time (40 hours/week) schedule as determined by the Hiring Manager. Off-shift and/or weekend work hours may be required. Relocation is available for this position.**

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the ongoing development of the Maintenance department's work-order software, Asset Essentials.
    • Enter weekly PMs and other routine tasks
    • Integrate existing departmental documentation
    • Clearly define various assets used by the Maintenance department
    • Identify and correct outdated, missing, or incomplete tasks
  • Curate a resource guide using MS applications (Word, Excel) directing users to commonly referenced risk assessments and work instructions stored outside the Asset Essentials system.
  • Participate in daily shop meetings debriefing the previous shift's activities, current issues, and priority projects.
  • Regularly walk the production floor to conduct general checks on assigned lines and identify opportunities for quality/safety/maintenance improvements
  • Engage with team members at all levels to inform new projects, prioritizing end-user functionality and feasibility of maintenance activities.
  • Frequently report on progress and challenges, collaborating with team members to creatively troubleshoot problems.
  • Embrace a team player mentality by approaching all assigned tasks with consideration and positive intent, regardless of scope.
  • Provide general support to the Maintenance department.
  • Contribute to Company-wide Safety, Quality, and Productivity goals.
  • Comply with all Company Environmental Health and Safety standards and Department of Health requirements.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma/GED equivalent
  • Freshman or first-year students in technical, engineering, manufacturing, or materials science programs preferred
  • Demonstrated aptitude for and interest in mechanics, machinery, automation, and technically challenging work
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills
  • Familiarity with and confidence in using basic hand tools and measurement instruments
  • Basic understanding of electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic drawings strongly preferred
  • Experience in software engineering, development, and/or design strongly preferred
  • Must be able to work around grease, oils, and solvents without adverse reaction
  • Ability to multi-task and work independently in a fast-paced production environment
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Excel and Word
  • Ability to quickly learn new computer software and programs
