The Flexibles Division has an immediate need for a Sr. Product Development Engineer to work with our industrial customers (shrink bundling, industrial and agricultural). This position is key to our commercial success through fostering strong customer relationships.  PD Engineers are frequently called on to support commercial efforts through product recommendations, design, and cost out.  This can involve developing new film blends through design, trialing, and scale-up to achieve unique customer requirements.  Will work closely with customer technical staff as well as internal groups such as product managers, sales, operations and the management team.

Responsibilities

  • Work with directly with customers to foster positive relationships to drive growth and profit.
  • Interact with technical and project personnel internal to Berry as well as suppliers.
  • Translate customer performance requirements into product recommendations or new product designs.
  • Interact with manufacturing personnel to optimize product design for ease of manufacturing
  • Prepare and submit BOMs, technical documents and descriptions to the commercial team to be utilized for product recommendations and to generate costing/price models.
  • Utilize proper stage gate methodologies for project management and tracking.
  • Interact with raw material suppliers to stay current with polymer systems, functional additives, physical property testing techniques, and various packaging and manufacturing equipment.
  • Assess current products and product lines for increasing sustainability across Berry, which may include, downgauging, right sizing, carbon emission reduction, recycled content and renewable or compostable materials.

Qualifications

  • Requires a solid understanding of resins and additives used in flexible films and the extrusion equipment used to create these film products.
  • Ability to ensure customer requirements are fully understood and translated into products that move toward commercialization a rapid pace.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, including planning, time lines, weekly communication, and key project updates. Comfortable with managing changing priorities

  • Ability to effectively communicate/present findings to a wide variety of audiences
  • Self-starter and ability to work independently as needed
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with limited information and drive to quick success.
  • Degree in Chemical or Polymer Science/Engineering
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in product development, process engineering or related areas
  • Experience working with coextruded cast/blown film equipment and product development activities.
  • Willingness to travel 20-40% of the time involving international travel (mainly Canada and Mexico).
  • Ability to travel and work in many different environments ranging from office to manufacturing sites to fields and farms.
