Purpose: The Scientist/Engineer or Principal Scientist/Engineer role has responsibility to deliver product innovations that create sustainable value in marketplace.  Responsible for designing, defining, and delivering new processes, technologies, and product innovations to drive growth defined by the Regional Business segments.   The individual is responsible for autonomous evaluation and planning of new products, processes, and improvements, to include supporting commercialization efforts utilizing commercial assets.

 

The ideal candidate will be located in the Cincinnati, Ohio area or the Nashville, Tennessee area.

Responsibilities

  • First and foremost, it is the responsibility of the incumbent to perform any and all tasks in a safe manner, keeping in mind safety on the job at all times. It is expected that the incumbent will not only practice safety on the job, but will be responsible for the safety of others working around them. The incumbent will also promote safety and demand safe work habits from anyone that is doing work for them and will include safety performance in any employee/contractor evaluation process. Surveys the technology landscape and evaluates and identifies the best new designs, process, and film products to support strategic initiatives of Berry.
  • Develops new process, technologies and engineered products to support strategic initiatives defined by Regional Business segment. Manages own projects and leads complex strategic projects.
  • Develops product designs and ideas that fulfill customer requirements while insuring financial success within Berry.
  • Provides strategic and tactical direction and leadership for Technical programs.
  • Collaborates with Regional Technical & Product Services, Regional Sales and Regional PLM’s to align market, customer, and product plans to drive strategic growth.
  • Demonstrates and delivers commercial technology and products including qualification and commercialization.
  • Independently manages own projects and contributes to complex strategic projects.
  • Designs, coordinates, prioritizes and executes the experimental program to be performed on bench, pilot and/or commercial scale equipment.
  • Extensive knowledge of various extrusion processes utilized within films and laminations.
  • Experience working within Healthcare, Hygiene and Industrial market segments/customers.
  • Accomplished in the use of problem solving and root cause analyses techniques.
  • Uses good practices to define, generate and protect intellectual property for Berry Global, Inc.
  • Determines test methods, procedures, and trials needed to support project objectives.
  • Analyzes data, issues reports, draws conclusions and makes process, product design, and/or equipment recommendations based on trial results.
  • Supervises, mentors and/or coordinates the work of technicians and others who assist in specific assignments.
  • Assesses performance capabilities of process and products compared to competition.
  • Interacts with key vendors and customers on project specific needs.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required. Science or Engineering degree preferred.
  • Advanced degree preferred.
  • 3+ years of related industry experience within Films, Laminations and Printing utilized within component and packaging films.
  • Experience with Statistical Analysis such as DOEs, including proficiency with Statistical software.
  • Experience with Problem Solving and Root Cause analysis.
  • Strong technical and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated Program management capabilities to define and implement technical strategy and programs to support a major project having a significant technical and/or financial impact.
  • Provides strategic and tactical direction and leadership for Technical programs.
  • Six Sigma experience a plus.
  • Expert in multiple technologies/ applications related to the field of flexible films.
  • Accomplished in technical interactions and communications with customers and suppliers.
